Marseille Health And Safety
Being a port of entry for thousands of immigrants from Africa, Marseille is potentially hazardous for visitors who are not up-to-date with their vaccinations. There is a slight risk of being exposed to diseases like tuberculosis; however, hepatitis A is prevalent and should be vaccinated against if you plan on eating at cheaper outlets. Generally, Marseille is much cleaner than it was a decade ago, particularly in the tourist areas, so there is no need to be overly concerned about potential health issues.
Safety
Once considered one of the most dangerous cities in Europe, Marseille has gone to great lengths to eradicate its serious crime problem. As a result, the city is much safer than it used to be, and is now no more dangerous that any large European city.
However, violent crimes such as muggings still occur and visitors should take normal precautions such as staying out of poorer neighbourhoods at night, sticking to well lit and popular areas and so on to avoid encountering problems. Much more common are pickpockets and petty thieves, who are likely to be encountered on the metro or crowded buses. Take particular care of your belongings when out in public, making sure you are in constant contact with your possessions and that you valuables are well concealed and protected.
