Deauville Entertainment
For an evenings entertainment in Deauville, visitors generally head into the town centre to enjoy a leisurely meal with a good bottle of wine, followed perhaps by a trip to a bar or caf-bar for a few beers or some of the locally brewed apple beverages such as cider and brandy. A night at the casino is of course a good option if you have a little disposable cash and are feeling lucky.
Eating out
Deauville has an excellent selection of eating places that reflects the countrys love of food and its pride in both national and regional cuisine variations. Visitors wanting to sample some of Deauvilles finest culinary creations will find an abundance of restaurants spread across the town. You can dine as cheaply or as expensively as you wish, however cost is not necessarily an indication of quality. Many of the small low-key establishments favoured by the locals are the best places to find authentic Deauville cuisine.
Local cuisine
The local cuisine in Deauville conforms to the traditions of Normandy, which sees typical dishes based on seafood and dairy ingredients, both of which are abundant in the area. Fish in cream sauces and meat in cheese sauces are both common creations, and while the use of herbs and spices is somewhat limited, the richness of the ingredients provides ample flavour and body to the various local dishes.
Apple brandy made from locally grown fruit also features heavily as an ingredient in many dishes. Popular items on a Deauville restaurant menu might include canard rouennaise, which is duck cooked in blood; moules mariniere, which is mussels in a shallot and white wine broth; and sole Normande, which is poached sole served with a thick sauce made from butter, eggs and cream.
Theatre and music
Deauville is somewhat lacking in significant theatre and live music venues, and is perhaps not the ideal town to visit if you require this kind of entertainment of an evening. Some popular hotels offer live music to accompany diners in their restaurants, while you may find local performers showcasing their musical talents in the traditional bars and caf-bars around the town centre.
The Asian and American film festivals that are held every year in Deauville are a good opportunity to catch the best in independent cinema from two continents, while the Swingin Deauville festival, held in July, sees performances from internationally famous artists from the genres of reggae, soul, jazz, folk, R&B and more.
Shopping
Sometimes dubbed Doughville on account of its wealthy residents and equally affluent visitors, Deauville offers some great shopping opportunities if you are a fan of designer clothing and accessories. Head for the area between Place Morny and the casino, where chic boutiques carrying the likes of Cartier, Louis-Vuitton and Yves Saint-Laurent can be easily found.
