Travelling To Cherbourg

As a busy port town, the vast majority of visitors arriving in Cherbourg do so via a ferry crossing. The town is highly accessible via the English Channel from both the UK and the Republic of Ireland, with regular sailings from both destinations. Air access can be gained via the Cherbourg Maupertus or Caen airports, with daily flights from Paris. The town is well served by the N13 and the A13 roads.

By car

The N13 provides principle access to the town and leads directly from Caen via Bayeux. From Paris, you should take the Autoroute A13, following directions for Rouen and travelling via Epone and Vernon. Before reaching Rouen, pick up the route to Caen from available directions then follow the N13 to Cherbourg. Once in the town, youll find getting around reasonably easy as most French roads are well signposted and Cherbourg is not especially big. Access to the popular holiday resorts of Brittany is also made easy and routes are equally well signposted.

By rail

From Paris Gare Saint Lazare you can take the train to Cherbourg Station. Services are regular and the journey time is only 3 hours. High-speed TGV trains do not service Cherbourg, with the nearest stations that are serviced by TGV routes being Le Havre and Rennes.

By bus

STN (Socit Des Transports de Normandie) provides bus services in the city of Cherbourg and connections with other Normandy destinations. There are also regular buses which depart from Paris, making traveling by bus a convenient way of reaching Cherbourg.

By air

Flights are available from Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle International Airport to Cherbourg Maupertus Airport. There are two return flights operating along this route per day. Flights are also available to the nearby airport at Caen, from where the drive to Cherbourg is relatively short and uncomplicated.

Cherbourg Maupertus is a small airport and as such, it offers very limited facilities. Visitors will find a single restaurant, Le Coucou de Fourchette, offering set four-course menus as well as an la carte menu. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday, while a caf area of the same facility is also available for snacks and drinks. Furthermore, a book and wine shop is available.

Taxis offer the only ground transportation option to and from the airport and can be pre-booked by calling either Artisans Cherbourg Taxi on: +33 233 533 638, or Cherbourg Taxi Communaute Urbaine on: +33 233 531 704.
