Chamonix Health And Safety

Apart from the threat of broken bones from skiing, Chamonix is a very safe town, although pickpockets are not entirely immune to the area and the roads can become quite dangerous in the height of winter.

Safety

Skiers should refrain from trying out the harder ski courses unless they have received the appropriate training to go up another level. Chamonix has hundreds of highly-experienced ski instructors able to offer short and long term courses. Stick to the slopes and only attempt out of bounds skiing if you have the experience and are with other able skiers. When hiking in the summertime, always carry enough provisions for eventualities and let friends or family know the time you will be away and your intended return date. The weather has a habit of changing in minutes at altitude and you may have to hole up if caught in an angry storm, for instance.

Drivers should fit snow chains to their tyres in the winter months when visiting Chamonix and take it very steadily when driving between villages. Taking out a comprehensive insurance package to include accident, theft and medical cover is essential when visiting Chamonix.

Health

France is one of the healthiest countries in the world and there are no serious health concerns to be aware of when visiting the Chamonix region. Travellers should however be aware of altitude sickness when ascending to the highest regions and should wear layers when skiing, as well as having extra layers available when hiking in the summer. Carrying isotonic drinks or powder mixes is also a good idea in both summer and winter. Chamonix has first-aid clinics, medical centres and pharmacies, and Geneva with its world-class hospitals, is only an hour away by car.

Travel insurance

It is essential that visitors to Chamonix have travel insurance, as the dangers associated with skiing are all too evident. Drivers are also more at risk of having an accident if not used to driving on severe mountain roads, and you wouldnt want to be without travel insurance if you get into difficulties. Citizens of EU countries can receive free healthcare in France owing to reciprocal health agreements with member countries, while visitors from elsewhere should ensure their travel insurance also covers them for medical eventualities.
