Brest Health And Safety

In general, Brest is considered a very safe and trouble-free place to visit. As with any town which has a tourist element, there will always be a certain number of petty thieves looking for unsuspecting prey. If you follow a few simple precautions, you shouldnt encounter any problems during your visit.

Safety

There should be very little to worry about when you visit Brest. The town doesnt have a reputation for being dangerous or crime-ridden. However, you should always use common sense when travelling abroad. Dont flash money or expensive items about and keep your camera and bags slung across your shoulder. After dark, stay out of the small alleys and backstreets, especially if you are around the port area.

Health

Brest is a very safe town in all respects and has no particular health issues to be concerned about. The tap water is safe to drink, although you may prefer the taste of bottled water. The food in the restaurants is up to international standards and is unlikely to present you with any stomach problems. However, keep in mind that shellfish can be dangerous if not fresh and properly cooked; check first to see that your lobster or shrimps have been thoroughly cooked before eating them.

Travel insurance

No matter how many precautions you take during your visit to Brest, there is always a potential risk of an accident or bit of misfortune. Theft can easily happen if you arent being careful, especially in the main tourist areas, which can quickly ruin your holiday. A little travel insurance goes a long way to ensure that you have peace of mind and a backup should anything unfortunate occur. The cost is minimal compared to the price of getting something stolen with no theft insurance.

Visitors who are not EU citizens should make sure they have comprehensive medical insurance before they travel. Medical costs in France can be expensive if something serious happens.
