Most of the really interesting sites around Brest are located outside the city and are inaccessible by public bus. Since taxis are expensive here, the best option is to rent a car. There are car hire offices at the airport and the train station, and all the major car hire companies are represented in Brest.

Simply driving along the winding coastal roads and lovely countryside makes for a good day out. There are several interesting historical sites within easy access of Brest, which are well worth a visit. Locronan is a prime example of a Breton town that seems to be frozen in time. From 1469 through the 17th century, this little town supplied much of the linen for sail making to the French, English and Spanish navies.

Quimper is another quaint little town dating from the 1st century BC. The town has some interesting local museums and is covered in small gardens. The Gothic cathedral, built in the 13th century, is the focal point of Quimper. The old port town of Douarnenez is another good place to visit for a feel of what real Breton port life is like. The three separate harbour areas have lots of character and many excellent restaurants. It has not been commercialised, so visitors will get an authentic glimpse of a fishing town at work.
