Be Safe In Prague

Safety

Tourism in Prague has grown immensely since the early 1990s and unfortunately, along with this growth, the incidents of crime have grown too. On the whole, Prague is a safe city and apart from the petty variety, there is a low rate of crime.
Most areas are safe to walk around at night, but always be alert and on your guard.

The most common criminals in Prague are pickpockets, who target vulnerable and often wealthy tourists. Always leave important and valuable items in a safety deposit box in your hotel when sightseeing; don’t flash money around in busy areas; keep hold of your possessions and never carry large amounts of cash on you. While you need to take note of this advice, there is no need to become paranoid, as this could have a negative effect on your holiday. The best piece of advice is to be aware of what’s going on around you. Czech police probably won’t take much action if you have been a victim of a pickpocket, so preventing the crime in the first place is the best form of protection for you.

Car break-ins are the most popular type of crime that is committed to property in the city. Never leave valuables in your car, as this can be an invitation for thieves to break in. Car theft is also fairly common, although the situation has improved in recent years. Always try to park your car in a car park with security or in a lockable garage.

Prague’s taxi drivers are renowned for ripping off tourists and being incredibly rude in the process. It is advisable to always negotiate a rate in advance of travel.
