Be Safe in Nicosia
Most visits to Nicosia are trouble-free, but you should be aware of the normal risks such as pickpockets, theft from parked cars and dangerous driving.
Safety
Petty crime aimed at visitors can be a concern, in particular bag-snatchers and pickpockets at the tourist sites and on public transport. Avoid carrying more cash than you need and do not wear expensive jewellery or hang cameras around your neck. Stay vigilant when visiting nightclubs, bars and outdoor cafs, especially at night.
Health
There are no specific health risks associated with travel to Nicosia. Additional vaccinations are not needed. Milk is pasteurised and tap water is generally safe to drink. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot. Pork, salad and mayonnaise may carry increased risk. One of the main risks for tourists is from sunburn during the hot summer months. Stay out of the midday sun and drink lots of water to help avoid dehydration.
Travel insurance
Nicosia is a safe city and most people holiday here without incident, however, there are still risks to cash and valuables, and its highly unwise to take a holiday or make even a weekend trip without taking out a travel insurance policy. If you are unfortunate enough to be the victim of a pickpocket or a bag-snatcher or you simply lose a valuable item while out and about, then good insurance cover can provide for reimbursement of any costs incurred in replacing items.
Visitors from non-EU countries should also ensure they are covered for medical eventualities, while EU citizens can benefit from reciprocal health agreements with the possession of an EHIC. The card gives access to state-provided medical treatment only and does not cover medical repatriation costs or ongoing illnesses. A comprehensive insurance policy is the only way of guaranteeing full cover.
