Stay out of the midday sun and be especially careful when swimming or snorkelling. Drink lots of water to help avoid dehydration. Milk is pasteurised and tap water is generally safe to drink. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot. Pork, salad and mayonnaise may carry increased risk.

Travel insurance

We strongly recommend you take out comprehensive travel insurance for you and your family. Accidents and other problems are far more common abroad than at home, and covering the cost of treatment can be very expensive. A good policy will protect you and help replace your belongings if they are stolen, and also cover you against cancellations and delays. Buying travel insurance with good quality cover should be a priority.

EU citizens may be eligible for free emergency treatment under the European Health Insurance Card (formerly the E111). Each country has different rules about state medical provision. In some cases, treatment is free, while in many countries, you will have to pay part or all of the cost and then claim a refund. The card gives access to state-provided medical treatment only and does not cover medical repatriation costs or ongoing illnesses. A comprehensive insurance policy is the only way of guaranteeing full cover.
