Weather In Sofia

Sofia enjoys a year-round mild climate, tempered by its elevation and location near mountains and seas. Summer temperatures are moderate, making for a pleasant time to visit. Winters can get cold and snowy, making this season more ideal for travellers seeking to indulge in snow sports.

Summer

Sofia summers feature low humidity, mainly on account of its location, 530 metres above sea level. Temperatures average 24°C, with temperatures reaching 28°C at the hottest time of the year, in August. Early summer and late spring make up the wettest time of the year, although rainfall is on a par with the country’s average. Note that while summer is a fantastic time to enjoy Sofia, many of the city’s residents pack up for their own vacation on the Black Sea.

Winter

Temperatures in Sofia usually drop to around 0°C between December and February, with January’s average lows at –4.9°C. However, the surrounding mountains that line the city’s trough-like shape shelter the city from European winds from the north. Winter activities are plentiful in and near Sofia; however, many city residents often travel out to other mountains in Bulgaria.
