Restaurants In Vienna
Vienna is home to a large selection of dining establishments, with everything from small traditional eateries where the locals hang out to top-class, internationally respected restaurants. There’s not only Viennese and Austrian cuisine to be found here, international food from France, Italy, China and India among other cuisines can all be found at various venues across the city.
Local cuisine
Vienna is hailed as offering one of the most famous cuisines on the planet and one which is based on its past and present mix of ethnicities and its assimilation of various food cultures over the centuries.
Wiener schnitzel is perhaps the city’s most famous dish and one which has been exported to countries all over the world. The speciality is essentially an escalope of veal, coated in breadcrumbs and fried before being served with the local potato salad known as erdäpfel salat. Other popular dishes include tafelspitz (beef with carrots, celery, leek and onion); kaiserschmarrn (a dessert consisting of shredded pancake and stewed fruit); apfelstrudel (light pastry filled with apple and raisins and flavoured with cinnamon); and salzburger nockerln (dessert made from eggs, flour, jam and butter).
Where to eat
Restaurants are spread evenly across the city centre and it depends on your budget and your taste as to where you go. Coffee houses are an integral part of Viennese culture and are a good place to grab some apfelstrudel, while Gastgarten establishments offer full menus and are good for the warm summer nights, as they are outdoor venues.
