Salzburg Weather
The city of Salzburg is located next to the Prealps and therefore very much influenced by the Alpine climate. Winters are usually quite cold and dry, and it snows quite often. Summers are hot and friendly; however, rainy periods occur and can last for a couple of days.
When to go
The weather usually turns wonderful around Easter, marking the start of the summer season, and remains so until about mid-October, often later. May and early June, and September and October are the most pleasant months for travel; there is less demand for restaurant tables and hotel prices tend to be lower.
Foreign visitors invade the city between Christmas and New Year's Day, at which time many Viennese are already on the slopes of western Austria, while it also draws crowds over the long Easter weekend. Visitors flock during July and August, when the main festivals are held.
String rain
Rain in strings (schnrlregen) is considered to be a typical Salzburg phenomena. Being on the northern edge of the Alps, Salzburg comprises 1,350mm of annual rainfall. No matter how much or little that sounds: it rains a lot. This weather pattern has been illustrated not only in countless books, poems, films and operas, but it has also earned local as well as international notoriety.
