Weather In Innsbruck

Innsbruck has a moderate, continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers in this part of Austria are generally warm and pleasant, but not too hot thanks to the surrounding mountains. Nights are usually cool and refreshing, and sometimes a light sweater is even needed. Rain can fall any time of the year, but it falls hardest in the summer months in the form of brief and dramatic afternoon thunderstorms.

Winter

The northeast of Austria has some very cold and snowy winter months. The higher up in elevation you go, the more snowfall you will find. Fortunately, if it’s not snowing, the days are bright and sunny, which make it feel much warmer. Occasionally, the bitter winter temperatures are lightened up by warm, dry foehn winds from the south.

The foehn winds

Tyrol’s capital, Innsbruck is famous for these warm, dry winds which come howling from the south. Spring and autumn are particularly subject to the foehn winds, which can prematurely trigger a dose of summer. The foehn winds also keep alpine valley fog at bay. Alpine valleys are subject to quickly changing weather conditions. If you venture out for a hike in the mountains, make sure you bring clothing for all conditions: wet, cold, windy and hot.
