Innsbruck is always in-season, so it’s advisable to make hotel reservations before you arrive. Hotel rooms become particularly scarce from June through the end of summer and from December through mid-April. There are plenty of choices when it comes to accommodation, which ranges from restored 18th century mansions to a bunk-bed in a youth hostel. Location should play a big part in your decision concerning where to stay.

Where to stay

There are many advantages to choosing a room in Innsbruck’s Old Town. The proximity to many of the major attractions, a plethora of shops and restaurants, and the undeniable medieval charm make the Old Town the ideal location. Naturally, the hotels situated right in the town’s centre are the most expensive, but you get what you pay for and the advantages may well be worth the extra money.

Many four and five-star hotels are clustered along the edges of the pedestrianised Old Town, if style is what you are after. However, Innsbruck is not a large city. There are several areas a little out of the city centre which are still relatively close to the Old Town. You can get to the city centre from almost any part of Innsbruck in 20 minutes via the extensive public transport system. These perimeter locations are always cheaper and quieter than the hotels situated right in the heart of the city.

The district of Pradl, just to the north of the city centre, has a wide selection of comfortable hotels and reasonably priced pensions. These family-run establishments are known for their friendliness and good service. Innsbruck boasts a number of inns and pensions, which offer the best value for money in the city. Goldene Winkel is a particularly picturesque pension that is worth a look.

The most inexpensive lodgings in the city are the summer hotels, which serve as student hostels the rest of the year. If you are looking for a cheap bed and you don’t mind skimping on comfort, these hostels are the best bet.

When to visit

There is barely any off-season in Innsbruck, so having a hotel reservation is essential if you are planning to visit in the summer or winter months. These are the peak seasons due to the myriad of outdoor activities on hand in the mountains surrounding Innsbruck. Summer brings hikers and winter brings skiers.

If you are more interested in seeing the city itself, you should consider visiting during the shoulder seasons. Although spring can be a bit muddy in the mountains as all the snow melts, there are very few tourists, so you can have the city to yourself. Autumn is one of the nicest times of the year, and often goes unnoticed by travellers. The weather is stunning, the mountainsides are an explosion of colour and generally, there are fewer tourists around.
