Travel to Montego Bay
Montego Bay is the second largest city in Jamaica and the gateway to tourist activity on the north coast of the island. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1494, but it was the Spanish who began to develop and expand the area after they settled here in 1510. Rich in culture and history, with Spanish, British and slave trade influences, Montego Bay makes an interesting holiday destination.
Transportation to Montego Bay
Montego Bay has the larger of the islands two international airports, the other airport being located at Kingston. Sangster International Airport is modest but modern, and it handles several international and domestic flights daily. Most flights from the USA land at this airport. The best way to get into the city from the airport is to take a taxi although there is a bus shuttle service available.
Traffic in Jamaica can be a bit chaotic for the first-time traveller, as few locals indicate before turning, nor do they stop at traffic lights in the quieter areas. Many of the roads do not meet international standards; nevertheless, the main coastal highway that circles the island is in fairly good condition. In general, it is possible to enjoy the city by hiring a car, at the airport or in the city, and driving around.
