Be Safe in Kingston

Health and safety are primary concerns for all travellers when travelling to a foreign destination. Kingston is no exception and travellers are advised to take into consideration the following guidelines.

Safety

Kingston has a reputation for violent crime that may deter visitors to this beautiful city. However, like many major cities in the world, crime is usually concentrated in certain areas and gang-related, which makes it safe for tourists to visit Kingston, as long as they exercise some sensible precautions.

Bag-snatching and pick-pocketing are two of the more common petty crimes in the Old Kingston area. Women in particular, but all tourists in general, should avoid walking on the beaches after dark. It is best to politely refuse all food and drinks that you have not bought yourself as, recently, there has been an increase in cases of spiked food and drink.

Travellers are also strongly advised to only use taxis that are authorised by the Jamaican United Travellers Association (JUTA). There are special taxi counters at the airport, and all hotels will support you in making booking arrangements.

Health

There are no health risks for travellers visiting Kingston. Visitors are encouraged to drink bottled beverages only to prevent diarrhoea. The weather in Kingston is very pleasant throughout the year, especially in the summer, with its pleasant cool breezes. However, the sun can be quite strong, and tourists are recommended to take care that they do not suffer from sunburn.

Travel insurance

It is always best to travel with a comprehensive travel insurance policy that supports you should any untoward events occur during your holiday. Comprehensive policies should cover the loss of personal belongings, delayed flights and luggage, and medical costs. Travelling with a travel insurance policy will also give you peace of mind, so that you can enjoy your holiday.
