Sydney Transport
Getting around Sydney is easy with the city’s extensive public transport system. Metro, monorail, Light Rail, buses and ferries combine to make the city easily accessible.
By Metro
CityRail has a large range of leisure and tourist tickets on offer for visitors. You can travel around the city centre on the City Circle Line. The monorail has a fabulous city loop with eight stops throughout the CBD. The monorail leaves every 3 to 5 minutes and takes approximately 15 minutes to do the circuit.
Metro Light Rail is Sydney's newest transport system. Modern trams run from historic Central Station through lively Chinatown and Darling Harbour to the Star City Casino, the Sydney Fish Markets and Wentworth Park 24 hours, seven days a week. The Sydney Pass (available for three, five or seven days) provides unlimited travel for the duration of the ticket on all CityRail trains within a bounded area, on Sydney Buses and all ferries.
By bus
Sydney Buses operates an extensive network of bus services throughout the city. The main bus terminals are located at Circular Quay, Wynyard, Town Hall and Central Station.
By ferry
Ferries have been a part of life on Sydney Harbour for more than 135 years. Regular services can take you from Circular Quay to 41 wharves including Parramatta, Woolwich, Birkenhead Point, Darling Harbour, Pyrmont Bay, Neutral Bay, Mosman Bay, Watsons Bay, Taronga Zoo and Manly. To highlight the beauty of Sydney's harbour, harbour cruises operate during the day and evening, and offer special day passes to popular attractions such as Taronga Zoo and Sydney Aquarium. In addition to normal ferry services, premium JetCat services between Sydney's CBD and Manly are available during peak periods.
Taxis
Taxis in all parts of Australia are tightly controlled by government regulations. Sydney taxis are all metered and the driver must turn on the meter as soon as you enter the cab. Sydney taxis are generally plentiful and can be ordered by phone, taken from a taxi rank or hailed in the street.
Tourist services
Sydney's only guided bus tour, the Sydney Explorer bus, makes a 35kms circuit of all the major attractions in the city, The Rocks, Sydney Opera House, Kings Cross, Chinatown, Queen Victoria Building and Darling Harbour. One-day tickets are available from the driver and enable passengers to board and leave the bus at any one of its 22 stops. Buses operate at 20-minute intervals from 09:00 daily.
From the airport
Airport Link is a fast and convenient way to reach the centre of Sydney. Trains run approximately every 10 minutes and the journey into the city takes only 13 minutes. The international and domestic rail stations link directly to the City Circle, which means most city destinations are within a short walk of a station. The international rail station is located at the northern end of the terminal and is accessible from the Arrivals level.
Many shuttle bus companies provide transport between the airport and most Sydney suburbs and regional areas. These buses need to be pre-booked. Sydney Buses has a timetabled service between Bondi Junction and Burwood, which includes stops at the T1 and T2 terminals en-route. Clearly marked bus stops are located at the Arrivals level of each of these terminals.
