Be Safe in Melbourne

Despite its size, Melbourne is widely considered to be one of the safest and friendliest cities in Australia. The multi-cultural population creates a pleasant tolerance for people of different ethnicities. Crime rates are low and it’s unlikely that you will experience any problems during your visit here.

Safety

Even though Melbourne is not known as a dangerous or violent city, there are still some parts of town where you need to be careful at night. St Kilda is a popular neighbourhood for backpackers and party-goers, but it has a seedy underside and it’s not advisable to walk alone around St Kilda at night. Parks and gardens can also be potential crime sites, and even the nightclub area around King street has its dangers.

Tourists are usually on the receiving end of the city’s petty crime, so it’s prudent to take a few precautions during your visit. The more you blend in, the less likely you are to be targeted as a tourist. Keep your money and valuables out of sight and your bags slung across your shoulder to deter an easy snatch. Inexpensive travel insurance is the best way to ensure any misfortune doesn’t ruin your holiday.

Health

There are no serious health risks in Melbourne which should cause you concern. The quality of the tap water is safe to drink, but it’s always advisable to stick to bottled water, as your stomach will not be used to the difference in microbes. The food in Melbourne’s restaurants is typically up to international standards, but make sure any street food you buy has been thoroughly cooked.

Australia is known as the skin cancer capital of the world for good reason. The sun in Melbourne is very strong, so always wear sunscreen and a hat when you head out. A nasty sunburn can quickly ruin your vacation. Also, drink plenty of water when you’re walking around the city; it’s easy to get dehydrated.

Australia is also home to some of the world’s most venomous creatures. Fortunately, Melbourne is not considered to be a dangerous area for poisonous spiders, snakes or box jellyfish, but if you venture out into the bush, keep in mind that these creatures are quite common and can cause you serious harm.

If anything does happen during your visit, there are excellent medical facilities right in Melbourne. All medical staff and doctors speak English and can assist with any problems. Visitors should get some travel insurance prior to their holiday to cover any unexpected hospital costs. The price of travel insurance is very small compared to an Australian medical bill.
