Hobart Restaurants

In Hobart, you'll find some of the best seafood restaurants in the country as well as fantastic new restaurants and great cosmopolitan dining. There are countless numbers of hidden places that serve local delicacies in the best way possible - bought straight from the farmer and fisherman that day. While many restaurants are licensed to sell alcohol, many others are not. In this case, it is a ‘B.Y.O’, or ‘bring your own’ alcohol establishment, so it is a good idea to find this out before you get there.

Local cuisine

Hobart’s cuisine not only features fantastic local seafood, but also other famous Tasmanian fare including fruits, cheeses and wines. International connoisseurs know Tasmania as Australia's gourmet island. World-class ales, beers and wines complement rock lobster, Atlantic salmon and the sweet saltiness of oysters. Tasmania now produces some excellent wines, notably Pinot Noir and others. The vineyards are small and special, and located mainly around the Tamar Valley and southwest Tasmania.

Where to eat

Hobart has two distinct restaurant districts; one includes the areas of Sullivans Cove, Salamanca Place and Battery Point, while the other centres on a cosmopolitan commercial strip on Elizabeth Street, North Hobart. In both districts, you’ll find an array of cuisines, many featuring fresh Tasmanian produce and seafood. Salamanca offers the casual diner much choice. The sandstone buildings, former shipping warehouses, now accommodate most of the restaurants, cafés and bars. Restored to maintain their sense of history, they also offer a contemporary atmosphere.
