Canberra Weather

Due to its inland location, Canberra offers warm summers and cool winters. Precipitation is fairly low throughout the year, with June traditionally being the driest month and October the wettest. The subtropical ridge pressure system brings in the warm weather in the summer as well as mild easterly and north-westerly winds to add respite. All of these factors make Canberra one of the most comfortable places to visit in Australia weather-wise.

Summer

Summer months run from December to February in Canberra, with the hottest month being January. Temperatures average around 30C during this time, although dont be surprised to see the mercury climbing above 40C on certain days along with 9 hours or more of sunshine.

Winter

Eventually, the subtropical weather moves away from the Australian Capital Territory, which marks the beginning of autumn (March to May), when the climate becomes drier and cooler. This is one of the best times to be in Canberra, and although pretty cool at night, it is great in the daytime with very little rainfall and comfortable temperatures. Occasionally, snowfall can be spotted up on the highest mountains surrounding Canberra around July and August time, although this is generally very short lived and there is no snow in the city itself.
