Canberra does not offer the extent and range of hotels and accommodation options that Sydney and Melbourne do, and you will usually end up paying more to stay here than you would in most Australian cities. With that said, Canberra hotels are generally very clean, have excellent facilities and are mostly located within easy reach of the city’s main attractions including museums, galleries, landmarks, shops, bars and restaurants.

Where to stay?

Most hotels are located around the Capital Hill region of south/central Canberra, especially in the Barton and Kingston districts, where many attractions and good public transport options are available. You will find the likes of the Comfort Inn and Crowne Plaza here as well as smaller chains and private operations. There are also many hotels to the north of the city centre, particularly along Northbourne avenue and in the smaller suburbs of Ainslie, Downer and O'Conner.

The majority of these areas only offer mid-range hotels and above although cheaper options can be found. The halls of residence at the Australian National University are open to the paying public from November to February (academic holidays), and there is also a youth hostel in the city.

Despite the relative expense, Canberra’s hotels and guesthouses are usually full throughout the year, particularly during the summer and autumn (December to May) and during the city’s many festivals and events. Government and business goings on also ensure that the hotels remain topped up; therefore, you should book ahead as far as possible. The best way to do this is online where booking is easy and good discounts are usually available.
