There are many ways to spend a relaxing or exciting evening at Alice Springs. Travellers may choose to have a quiet dinner and then attend one of the many shows that are usually available in town or they may prefer to party the night away.

Eating out

Visitors will not find it difficult to find a place to have a meal at in Alice Springs, as there are several restaurants, cafs, sidewalk bistros and bakeries to suit all budgets.

Bojangles Restaurant is very popular with tourists, as it has a huge menu that includes kangaroo, ostrich steak and other bush goodies. The Red Dog Caf on Todd Street is unique for its style, which is somewhere between a saloon and a Burger King restaurant. The hamburgers here are a favourite, as are the huge portions. Like many other restaurants on Todd Street, the Red Dog Caf includes all sorts of delectable outback tucker on its menu. The caf is also famous for its sandwiches, Aussie meat pies, sausages, steaks and wide selection of desserts.

Alfrescos has the largest range of coffee and cakes, and is well worth a visit if you have a sweet tooth. An unusual restaurant to try would be Kellers, which serves an eclectic mix of Indian, Swiss and Australian cuisine. Chinese, Italian and many other cuisines are also available at Alice Springs.

Fine dining can be enjoyed at the casino or at the restaurants at the luxury hotels and there are also several stylish restaurants on Todd and Baker Streets.

Local cuisine

As Australia has been influenced by so many different cultures, it is hard to come by an authentic Aussie meal these days; however, delicacies worth trying include kangaroo, ostrich or crocodile steak, while you will also find plenty of Aussie meat pies, sausages and sandwiches in the cafs.

Theatre and music

Do not for one minute imagine that nightlife will be tame at this outback holiday destination. Nightlife at Alice Springs can go on for ever. Many locals start partying on Friday night by having dinner at Alice Springs Memorial Club, followed by a karaoke session and then off to the ever popular Bojangles, Australias first pub. When the pub closes at 02:00, people head for Lasseters Casino.

Other lovely pubs with character and ambience at Alice Springs include Seans Bar, Sports Bar and the Firkin and Hound. The nightclub, close to Melankas, is also an interesting pit stop.

Alice Springs has a large performing arts centre, which regularly hosts international and national performers. There are also several local theatre companies that perform musicals and more serious plays. Live bands can be seen at some of the pubs in town.

Shopping

Shopping at Alice Springs is a delightful experience, as there are many chain stores and quaint curio and speciality shops. Boomerang Art is one of the many art galleries that sell paintings and sculptures by internationally-acclaimed aboriginal artists. Alice Springs is also fairly well-known for the good quality opals and other rocks that can be found here.
