Things to do in Adelaide
Adelaide is an easy city to walk around, with many of the top attractions situated close to one another. If you fancy getting away from the city centre, you can head to one of Adelaide’s many parks, Botanic Gardens or take a trip along the River Torrens. Some of Adelaide’s museums are among the best in the country, and the churches are simply stunning.
Old Adelaide Gaol
This can be found in the city centre and dates back to 1878. It was decommissioned in 1988, and now serves as a popular tourist attraction. The gaol houses a hanging tower, an observation tower and a large bell, which was cast in 1857. Other attractions include an education centre and of course, the infamous cells. Ayers Historic House
This grand mansion is a very important landmark mansion in central Adelaide. It dates back to the mid-19th century and offers visitors the chance to view some impressive Regency architecture as well as its intricately decorated interior and the numerous portraits and pictures hanging on the walls. Beehive Corner Building
This 100-year-old construction is one of Adelaide's most unusual buildings. It can be found in the city centre and is a striking neo-Gothic structure. There are many unique features that delight visitors and it makes for an excellent photograph.
St Peter's Cathedral
This wonderful building can be found in the North Adelaide area and was built between 1869 and 1901 in a neo-Gothic style. It has a very tall cathedral spire and a vast interior, which is filled with stone carvings and houses impressive stained-glass windows depicting historical events in South Australia. You might also like to view the lantern tower and the stunning marble Christening font, which dates back to 1877. Torrens Lake, Elder Park
Torrens Lake is a small oasis inside the city centre. It is a large expanse of water, which can be found very close to many of Adelaide's most prominent landmarks. There are regular boat trips around Torrens Lake, which provide one of the best ways to fully appreciate Adelaide's magnificent skyline and imposing buildings.
The Adelaide Hills
The Adelaide Hills can be found 25 minutes drive from the city. Here you will find historic villages, beautiful orchards and vineyards, stunning views and wildlife parks. You will also find many arts and craft shops, where you can be sure to pick up a unique gift or two. Cleland Wildlife Park can be found here and it is home to a range of Australian native animals. The Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley is located approximately 45kms northeast of Adelaide. It is one of Australia’s highest-regarded wine regions, with over 50 wineries offering cellar-door tastings. There are many quaint little villages to be found here, many of which have a distinct Germanic influence.
Beaches
Adelaide offers visitors the chance to relax on one of its stunning beaches. These are exceptionally clean, with golden sand and crystal clear water. They are the ideal place to relax, sunbathe, swim or snorkel. Many feature strong waves, which are perfect for keen surfers. You will find numerous beachside restaurants, street cafés, wine bars and barbeques along all of the beaches as well as friendly lifeguards and children’s activities.
Art Gallery of South Australia
This gallery is Adelaide’s most important art museum. It features works by some major Australian artists and includes temporary art as well as paintings, tapestries and ceramics. There are also touring exhibitions here, where lesser-known artists can display their work.
Migration Museum
This fascinating museum tells some very intimate stories about early days in Australia. You can learn about South Australia’s convict history as well as the subsequent waves of immigration.
National Aboriginal Cultural Institute
This museum displays many Aboriginal works of art, with some arriving from tiny and very remote communities. Other exhibits give visitors an insight into Aboriginal culture and everyday life. Once you have toured the museum, visit the on-site shop which sells aboriginal art – a must for any house.
National Railway Museum
The historic Goods-Shed Platform can be found on the site of the old Adelaide Railway Station. It is home to one of the best collections of railway memorabilia in Australia, including over 20 engines.
