Adelaide is regarded as a relatively safe city to visit and tourists do not need to overly worry about their personal safety. You should however use common sense and take the necessary precautions with personal belongings, as petty thieves do operate here.

Violent crime in Adelaide is very rare, especially among tourists. As with any large city however, is it adviseable to try and get familiar with your surroundings and to be very careful with your money and belongings. Adelaide does not have a high crime rate, but petty thieves are known to operate in the busy tourist areas.

The police will be able to help should you fall victim to petty criminals. You must report any theft or loss immediately for insurance purposes.

Health

There are no specific vaccinations required for travel to Australia. You should ensure, though, that your routine vaccinations such as tetanus and polio are up-to-date.

One of the major causes of illness in Australia is the sun. Common illnesses include sunstroke, sunburn and dehydration. Try to avoid being out in the sun in the heat of the day and always wear sunscreen. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and seek medical advice if you are unwell for more than three days.

If you are partaking in water or extreme sports, always follow safety precautions, as instructed.

Most pharmacies in Adelaide are open from 08:00 to 20:00. They are all run by qualified professionals who offer basic medical advice, sell a supply of medication and dispense prescribed medication. If you are travelling on an extended trip to Adelaide, you are allowed to bring in up to three months' worth of prescription medication.
