Local cuisine
Australian cuisine is traditionally based on British recipes, which were brought over by the first settlers. Typical food includes pies, roasted cuts of meat, grilled steak and other forms of meat, generally accompanied by vegetables such as potatoes, beans, peas and carrots, with these type of dishes often referred to as ‘meat and three veg’.
However, with the city becoming increasingly cosmopolitan, Australian cuisine is now heavily influenced by a variety of Mediterranean and Asian foods. British traditions can still be seen, but are more common at takeaways, such as fish and chip shops.
The Australian dining experience would not be complete without mentioning the ‘barbie’. The country is renowned for BBQ meat feasts as well as cracking open a few tins of beer to accompany the feast.
