Things to do in Phuket

There is much more to Phuket than just its stunning beaches. People don’t often associate the island with cultural activites, but there are numerous temples and good museums which allow a glimpse into the past and present life of the locals. There is also a good deal of nature to enjoy, with waterfalls, islands and an aquarium being just some of the attractions on offer. Of course, if you would prefer to relax while enjoying the sun, the beaches are stunning and full of individual character; perfect for any sun-worshipper.

Beaches

Many people travel to Phuket to take advantage of the beaches. It is a tropical paradise renowned for golden sand and crystal clear waters. The island of Phuket is surrounded by beautiful beaches, all of them with their own unique character. They range from tiny, secluded bays to large resort-style beaches. Regardless of whether you simply want to relax and soak up the sun or partake in some water sports, you will be kept entertained.

Islands

Phuket's archipelago is renowned for being one of the most beautiful places in the world. You may not have time to visit all of the islands, but you should certainly visit a few. James Bond Island is famous for being in two Bond movies, while the island of Phi Phi Lay was featured in the Hollywood blockbuster The Beach. The islands are stunning and can all be reached by boat.

Some islands can be visited on daytrips, while others such as Phi Phi Don and Koh Lanta offer accommodation, allowing you to stay for as long as you like. The Similian Islands are a stunning selection of islands which can be viewed on a boat tour. There is no accommodation on the islands themselves, but the boats offer sleeping arrangements. Other islands worth visiting include Coral Island, Kaew Island and Sirey Island.

Temples

Temples, known as wat in Thai, can be found everywhere. Temple’s doors are always open and most are located close to roads and are easily reached. Every temple is stunning in design and each is complete with its own history. It is worthwhile taking a day to visit some of Phuket’s most revered temples including: Jui tui, Pra nahng sahng, Pra tong, Put jaw, Sanjao sam san and Wat chalong.

There are etiquettes for entering temples which must always be followed, the most important being to dress conservatively, covering shoulders and knees. In addition to this, you should always take off your shoes before entering a temple and never touch a monk if you are female.

View points

When you visit Phuket, be sure to remember your camera, as there are many stunning viewpoints for memorable shots. The sunset view from Laem Promthep is breathtaking and you will find cliffs overlooking golden sandy beaches, with crystal clear water and monkeys climbing swaying palm trees to pick coconuts.

Kao Rang Hill offers an excellent view of Phuket Town, the southern part of the island and some of the offshore islands, while Prom Thep Cape is a headland which stretches into the sea, forming the extreme south-end of Phuket. The cape is home to tall cliffs which offer wonderful vistas. There are many more viewpoints located across the island, many offering refreshment stalls and restaurants.

Waterfalls

Phuket has three major waterfalls, which all make great daytrips. Ton Sai is a small waterfall with stunning pools that are shaded by tall palms. Bang Pae can be found at the site of the Gibbon Fund, a project to return domesticated gibbons to the forest. A walk to this waterfall will take you through forested land, where you may even catch a glimpse of one or two of these wonderful animals. Kathu Waterfall can be found inland and is a perfect spot for a picnic and an afternoon swim. At the top of the waterfall, you will find cooling pools, which offer a peaceful place for a dip.

Museums

Phuket Seashell Museum (tel: +66 76 381 266) houses the world's most valuable collection of seashells. Shells from Phuket and other Thai waters are among those which are most desired by collectors and you will also find some of the world’s rarest shells here. Aside from shells, the museum is also home to the world’s largest golden pearl and fossils dating back to some of the world’s earliest forms. The Thalang National Museum (tel: +66 76 311 025) displays ancient artefacts from Phuket's long history including exhibits detailing the famous Battle of Thalang, daily life in Phuket and the sea gypsy culture.
