Travel to Krabi

Located on Thailands Andaman seaboard, Krabi is one of Thailands most commercially developed provinces. It is popular with visitors, both as a destination in itself as well as being used as a base for travelling on to Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta or more than 120 other islands located within the province.

Transportation to Krabi

Krabi Airport is located about 10kms from Krabi Town and about 25kms from the provinces main beach areas and Highway 4. The only direct flights into Krabi Airport are from Bangkok and Singapore, so many visitors transfer by car, minibus or boat from the busier Phuket International Airport.

There are no direct rail options to Krabi, but it is possible to take a train from Bangkoks main station at Hualamphong to either Trang or Nakhon Si Thammarat and complete your journey to Krabi by bus or taxi. Hualamphong Railway Station is located on Rama IV road.

The VIP buses from Bangkok are good value for money, with reclining seats, snacks and coffee. These buses, along with cheaper non-airconditioned buses,
depart from Bangkoks Southern Bus Terminal on Borommaratchonnani Road. Please note that Thai people tend to like icy air conditioning, so it may be a good idea to take along a light jumper or jacket.

If driving to Krabi, you can either follow Highway 4 the whole way from Bangkok or reduce your mileage by switching to Highway 41 and then back again. A car ferry to Koh Lanta is located about 40kms south of Krabi Airport.

What to see

Krabi has Thailands oldest history of continued settlement, and the provinces numerous strange yet beautiful limestone cliffs and caves provide plenty of mileage for adventurous travellers.

Krabi has some excellent beaches as well as an impressive tourist infrastructure.
There is plenty of entertainment, mainly at small bars and clubs that cater to a young crowd, some with live music. However, Krabi is mostly suited to families and upscale tourists looking for good water sports and great seafood.

Activities and leisure

Krabis warm and inviting waters are ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. Many dive companies, catering to divers of every level and budget, are located in and around Krabi Town, Ao Nang, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. The most popular dive sites are Koh Rok, Koh Ngai, Koh Yong, Koh Hong, Koh Poda, Koh Phi Phi Lae and the Hin Muang and Hin Dang reefs.

Bird-watching is another popular activity, particularly between January and April. Many rare species including gurneys, big-winged brown kingfishers, herons and finfoots can be seen in the beautiful mangrove forests surrounding Kanab Nam Hill, which is close to Krabi Town. Tung Tiao in Klong Tom district, also known as Khao Nor Chuchi Forest Reserve, is another site that is popular with bird-watchers.

Daytrips

Another option for adventurous visitors to Krabi is a sea kayaking daytrip. Some of the trips currently on offer include tours of Talane mangrove forest, Koh Hong or Ban Bo Tho. It has been found that a kayak is the ideal transport for exploring the many fascinating caves found in Krabi and its islands.

Safety issues

In general, Krabi is a safe province to visit, with very few cases of pick-pocketing or bag-snatching reported. However, try to remain alert to possible dangers and be particularly careful with your luggage when travelling by bus. If participating in adventurous activities such as rock climbing, you are at a greater risk of having an accident. In light of this, we strongly advise you to take out travel insurance for you and your family.
