Be Safe in Koh Samui
Thailand is generally considered a safe country and Koh Samui is a very safe place for tourists, with open violence in the streets being very rare.
Safety
Touts can sometime be a problem. These people often wait in front of temples or museums and tell visitors that the attraction they have come to see is closed. They then suggest that they should visit a jewellery shop or a handicraft store instead. These touts should be ignored, unless you want to buy some low quality gems at a high price. Likewise, always refuse when somebody offers you a free tour at tourist attractions. These free tours often end up at jewellery shops.
There is some crime, but it is unlikely that visitors will encounter any. The highest threat to tourists is the threat of getting pick-pocketed. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash, credit cards or travellers cheques.
Health
Probably the most common health risk is sunburn. Thailand is close to the equator, which means the rays of the sun are strong and can burn skin quickly and easily. Everyone wants to return home with a holiday tan; however, use caution, sunscreen and begin your tanning process slowly to build up a base. Be sure to drink plenty of water too.
For those who hire cars and particularly motorcycles, it is not advisable to drink alcohol when driving. This is an easy way to end an enjoyable holiday.
Never drink tap water. Most restaurants serve safe bottled water, except for some very rural stalls which may boil their drinking water first. Ice is safe to use. Malaria and dengue fever exist in Thailand, but are not common in Koh Samui.
Koh Samui has several medical clinics catering to foreigners, most of them located in Chaweng and Lamai. But for serious conditions, its better to head to Bangkok, Phuket or Singapore. Pharmacies in Thailand are well-stocked; however, if you require any specific medication, its a good idea to bring an adequate supply with you.
