Travel to Bangkok
Renowned as one of the most frenetic cities in the world, Bangkok has a reputation for exquisite temples, manic shopping, notorious nightlife and gridlocked traffic. The urban and cultural core of the nation, Thailands capital is also the financial hub of one of the worlds fastest growing economies. The Big Mango has everything for its visitors, from shopping to day excursions and fine dining to a hearty nightlife.
Transportation to Bangkok
Bangkoks new Suvarnabhumi Airport is a major hub for air travel in Southeast Asia, and is 30kms east of Bangkok. A free shuttle bus transports passengers to where buses, taxis and rental cars take you to the heart of the city. Bangkok is also well-connected by rail to and from major cities throughout the country as well as offering services to Singapore via Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth in Malaysia. Air-conditioned VIP buses ply routes from the three major bus stations in Bangkok, each serving different regions of the kingdom.
What to see
Bangkoks top tourist destination is the Grand Palace, home to Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), dating to the 16th century, is the oldest and largest Buddhist temple in the city. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) features a 79-metre-high, Khmer-inspired tower. As with all Thai temples, remember to dress appropriately when visiting. Other Bangkok attractions include the backpacker haven that is Khao San Road, Wat Saket and its raised fortifications and the hair-raising, snake-handling demonstrations at the Red Cross Snake Farm.
Daytrips
A Bangkok must-do is a cruise along the Chao Phraya River to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, 74kms north of Bangkok, not to mention the stopover at the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace. Also, be sure to experience the colourful floating market at Damnoen Saduak, Ratchaburi, just south of Bangkok.
Activities and leisure
To recuperate from sightseeing, take a Thai cuisine class, pamper yourself with a relaxing Thai massage or experience the thrill of a muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) match. Satisfy your curiosity about Bangkoks naughty nightlife by taking a walk on the wild side at the Patpong district.
Safety issues
Beware of pickpockets and confidence tricksters, and take precautions against sexually transmitted infections including HIV, which is quite common among sex workers here. Driving can be manic, so exercise caution when crossing the roads by taking a pedestrian bridge. Taking out travel insurance for a trip to Bangkok is highly recommended.
