Penang Weather

Penang's climate can be described as equatorial, a pleasant mix of warm, sunny days and occasional cooling rainstorms. Humidity is relatively high. There are no distinct hot or cold seasons. The temperature consistently ranges from a pleasant 23ºC to a hot 32ºC.

Rain and monsoon

The mean annual rainfall of approximately 267cms is evenly distributed throughout the year, although September to November is considered the wettest period. The northeast monsoon blows between October and March, and from May to September Penang is affected by the southwest monsoon. Heavier rainfall comes to the island in spring and autumn, when the monsoon changes course; however, this increased rainfall should not ruin a visit to the west coast or the hill stations.

Penang Hill

Mornings are usually hot and sunny, with showers in the afternoon. Visitors should remember to bring raincoats and umbrellas when visiting Penang. Penang Hill is a hill resort consisting of a group of peaks, Penang’s major hill system. It is to be found six kilometres from the city centre of Georgetown.

The most important trait of Penang Hill is the cooler climate. The central summit area has an average temperature ranging from 20°C to 27°C. The mean minimum temperature is constantly below 21°C. The hottest months here are between December and April, while the coolest months are between June and October.
