Penang Transport
There are various inexpensive ways of getting around Penang. Taxis, buses, bicycles, and trishaws are some of the most regular modes of transportation. Riding bicycles or going by trishaw are both enjoyable ways to see the city.
By bus
Buses service the major routes around the city and the island. The main terminals can be found at Weld Quay and in front of the Komtar Shopping Centre in Georgetown. Machines onboard the buses accept coins for payment of tickets.

Taxis
Cabs are freely available around the island. Although they are required by the authorities to use a meter for transport charges, most do not turn the meter on. Insist on the meter being used or agree on a fixed fare before boarding. Some of the major taxi operators include: Georgetown Taxi Service (tel: +60 4 261 7098), Penang Taxi Drivers Association (tel: +60 4 262 5721), Sunshine Taxi Services Association (tel: +60 4 642 5961) and Jade Auto Company (tel: +60 4 2263015).
Trishaw
A ride in an open three-wheeled vehicle is one of the best ways to see the sights of Georgetown. There is no standard fare and it would be wise to agree on the price before you step on the trishaw. For extended sightseeing, it is advisable to hire them by the hour.
Tourist services
The Georgetown Shuttle Bus is a free bus service provided by the Georgetown Municipal Council. The route starts at the ferry terminal and passes through popular parts of Georgetown including Komtar and Penang Road. The service runs at regular 12-minute intervals from 07:00 to 19:00 on Mondays to Fridays and 07:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays. There is no service on Sundays or public holidays.
From the airport
Transport options from the airport to Georgetown are limited to taxis and buses.
Taxis operate with a coupon system by which fares between the airport and various destinations in Penang are fixed. Air-conditioned taxis and limousines charge higher fares. The Penang Yellow Bus Company runs an hourly service between the airport and Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) in the city between 06:00 to 22:00 daily (bus number 83). Some of the major hotels provide shuttle buses for guests arriving at the airport.
