Bali Transport
Bali is a relatively large island, but commuting around is easy. Public buses ply scheduled routes around the island, while bemos, minivans, taxis and shuttle buses also enable tourists to travel around the island. Cycling is also a possibility, though the roads can be very busy and driving habits unpredictable.
By bus
Bemos are essentially minivans which operate as a flexible bus service. They are one of Bali's preferred forms of transport, though metered taxis have encroached upon their predominance in the southern parts of the island. Fares on bemos are low, but unwary tourists are often overcharged, and drivers can often insist upon chartering the vehicle.
Denpasar’s Tegal bus station is a major hub for bemos, though other towns such as Singaraja, Amlapura and Gianyar also have terminals, enabling passengers to travel the length of the island by using this affordable and efficient method of transport.

Taxis
Metered taxis are fairly common in Denpasar and other areas of southern Bali, but aren’t available in many other parts of the island. Pricing includes an initial service fee as well as a fee that’s based on the number of kilometres travelled. There may also be an additional charge of up to 30 per cent for trips that extend outside of southern Bali. If a driver refuses to use the meter, you should exercise caution in agreeing to use the service, and only agree after deciding on the fare.
Tourist services
Tourist shuttle buses also operate along Bali's main tourist routes several times a day. These are fast and comfortable, though more pricey than bemos. There are a number of outlets on the island that sell tickets for shuttles including many shops, hotels and travel agencies around the island.
From the airport
Most hotels offer cars or minivans to collect passengers from arriving planes and your hotel can arrange a pick up at the airport if you request this service in advance. Taxis can also be arranged from the counter just outside Customs, though one should use the pre-paid Airport Taxi Service, as the prices are fixed, and coupons can be paid for at the desk in Arrivals.
A bus service is available from the airport to the Tegal bus station in Denpasar: journeys take 50 minutes. Alternatively, you can travel by bemo, as the locals choose to travel. A bemo is a chartered vehicle that accommodates up to 10 people, and is an economical way of getting around the island.
