There is plenty of accommodation available in and around the city; however, many hotels charge premium rates that include a luxury tax and a service charge. The state has also imposed luxury taxes that fluctuate between three and 30 per cent, depending on the cost of the hotel room. Colaba, at the southern end of the city, is the most popular area to find tourist accommodation. Marine drive is more upmarket and Juhu Beach, in the north, has several four-star and five-star hotels.
The Ascot is one of Mumbai’s oldest hotels and it has comfortable, spacious rooms with good facilities. The Taj Mahal Intercontinental, a five-star hotel, is not only known for its architecture and history, but also for the fantastic service that the staff provide for guests. Fariyas, just opposite the Taj Mahal Intercontinental, has luxurious themed rooms and fantastic facilities including a popular pub on its premises.
Marine drive offers lavish hotels including the Ambassador Hotel, Marine Plaza and India’s most expensive hotel, the Oberoi. Three-star hotels include the Bentley and the Chateau Windsor. Juhu Beach offers the Centaur Juhu Beach, a five-star hotel, and Mumbai’s Holiday Inn. There are also several smaller three-star hotels scattered around the city.
Airport hotels
There are several hotels around the area of the Chattrapathi Shivaji International Airport and the Santa-Cruz Domestic Airport. Many of these hotels charge premium rates, as they cater to mostly transit passengers and flight crews.
The Shangri La, located on Nanda Parker road, is a small three-star hotel near the Santa Cruz Airport which has clean air-conditioned and non-air conditioned rooms. The Centaur is a five-star hotel that is located near the domestic airport. The Kumaria Presidency and the Leela are located near the international airport. Both these hotels are fairly luxurious and provide good facilities.
