Shanghai Weather

Shanghai’s climate is characterised by a hot summer, cool autumn, cold winter and a warm spring, The weather is moderate, with an annual average temperature of 15°C. The seasons are not generally as distinct as in the north.

Summer

Summer is the peak tourist season and it has the highest temperatures. The city can be very crowded, with scorching temperatures and humid conditions. July and August are the hottest months, with average highs of 27°C. Note that the mercury can often soar to 40°C. Shanghai also receives a fair amount of rain. During mid June to early July there is often light rain and then, during July, strong storms with torrential rain become frequent.

Other seasons

The best times to visit Shanghai are in the spring and autumn. The temperatures are warm but not uncomfortable and the crowds are noticeably smaller. Rainfall is considerably less than in the summer months, with late September to mid-November probably being the best time to plan a trip.

Winter is bitterly cold and the temperatures can drop below freezing, and the views are grey and misty. January is the coldest month, averaging just 3°C, however snowfall is rare. You will certainly need to bring warm clothes if you want to visit during the winter.
