Finding accommodation in Shanghai is never a problem. The city boasts a huge number of hotels; however, many of them cater for the business and luxury sectors. Cheap accommodation is somewhat difficult to find, leaving few options for budget travellers. New skyscraper hotels are being built at an astonishing rate, especially in the business district of Pudong. Here, you can find the tallest hotel in the world, situated on the top floors of the 420 metre Jin Mao Building.
Prices are generally higher than elsewhere in China and hotel rates are usually quoted in US dollars, but you can still pay in renminbi. All the big chains have a presence here and prices are aimed at expense accounts. If money isn't a problem, then consider one of the grand old Shanghai hotels that are very much part of the city's history. They contain some of the finest Art Deco interiors you will ever see and are worth visiting even if you are not staying at the hotel.
The Pujiang district has the best choice for budget accommodation. There are a few other inexpensive options including the Captain Hostel on the Bund and guesthouses at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. During the low season from November to April, there are some good discounts if you search hard.
Where to stay
The main decision that you will have to make is whether to stay east or west of the Huangpu River. The Pudong area is to the east and has the best choices for business travellers, and is convenient for access to the financial district. However, tourists might want to consider looking elsewhere.
To the west are several other areas that are slightly more central; the Old French Concession district serves both businessmen and tourists with a good selection and range of accommodation. It also has some of the fine old hotels with Art Deco designs. The Bund and Nanjing road are a popular choice for visitors, with many good examples that represent Shanghai's colonial past, the most well-known being the Peace Hotel. It dates back to the early 20th century and is one of the most famous hotels in the world, with a first-class reputation.
