Hong Kong Restaurants

Everyone eats out in Hong Kong and there is an eatery for every type of taste, from noodles to seafood and a slew of expensive international restaurants. Prices are generally very cheap in the local restaurants and the freshness and variety of dishes is amazing and one up from China proper.

Local cuisine

Many cuisines are represented in Hong Kong including standard Cantonese cuisine as well as Teochew and Sichuan, which are generally found in other regions of China. The most popular local speciality is, without doubt, dim sum.  This is mainly eaten for breakfast or lunch and features small quantities of Cantonese fare served with tea.

In addition, cha chaan teng (meaning tea café) are also becoming very popular, and they tend to mix Western and Eastern cuisines. Two typical cha chaan teng dishes are stir-fried spaghetti and baked rice with cheese, and noodles with Spam. Barbecues are also a big deal in Hong Kong, and you can find everything on the coals from fish and pork to beef and chicken wings.

Where to eat

Seafood is a big thing in Hong Kong and there are restaurants all along the coastal areas; Sai Kung and Lau Fau Shan, with their live seafood tanks are particularly good. Aberdeen’s Jumbo floating restaurant is also well worth a mention. The best areas to find a good range of international restaurants in Hong Kong are in the entertainment districts of Knutsford Terrace, Lan Kwai Fong and Soho, while dim sum can be enjoyed everywhere, especially in Kowloon.
