Travel to Tangiers

A bustling city with a unique location in Morocco, on the northern tip of Africa and a short drive from Europe, Tangiers is a melting pot of many cultures. Boasting many architectural marvels that reflect the interesting history of the city, Tangiers is a must-visit, where the smell of aromatic Moroccan food fills the air, beautiful people flock to the squares and a lovely main beach stretches along the coastline, unfolding views of Gibraltar.

Transportation to Tangiers

You can arrive in Tangiers by air, road, rail and sea. The most convenient way to travel here is by air, as Tangiers has its own international airport, Tangier Boukhalef Souahel Airport, located only 20 minutes drive from the city centre.

Long-distance buses also serve Tangiers and other major cities in Morocco, arriving via ferry from Spain or Gibraltar. The ferry trip takes only 70 minutes and you will arrive at the busy port located near the Medina, in the heart of the city.

The best way to explore the city is on foot, but you can also use the services of le petit taxi, available everywhere in the city. Remind your driver to activate the meter every time you embark on a journey.

What to see

With many tourist attractions in Tangiers, tourists can get a feel of what the city was like in the past. These enchanting sites reflect the fascinating history of the city and its distinctive culture.

The precious gems of Tangiers can be viewed at the Kasbah, an old palace-turned-museum that displays many interesting collections of antique items and art pieces, while the Petit Socco, a popular square where people gather and relax at the lovely cafs, and the Grand Socco, where sultan Mohammed V made a famous speech referring to independence for Morocco, are also popular attractions.

Activities and leisure

Food connoisseurs will love eating in Tangiers, where you can enjoy aromatic Moroccan dishes that have a kick of spiciness, a mouth-watering mix of flavours and healthy ingredients. If you dont like sitting in a restaurant, do what the locals do and hang out in the most famous square, Place de Paris, one of the locals favourite pastimes.

Worthwhile daytrips include a visit to Chefchaouen, a charming town with a medieval ambiance and a Spanish character; and a journey to the fishing village of Asilah, where you can hop on a donkey cart and explore the city and its beautiful beach.

Safety issues

Morocco is an Islamic country, so women should be mindful about what they wear. Crime hardly take place in Tangiers, but there have been some reports of theft at knifepoint in deserted areas. Practice common sense and be on guard at all times. The best way to ensure your safety and coverage in the event of loss or the need for medical care is to take out travel insurance for you and your family.
