Tangiers Entertainment
If you have had enough of visiting major tourist attractions, there are many places in Tangiers where you can sit back, relax and breathe in the atmosphere of this vibrant city. The squares scattered around the city are perfect for people-watching over a long, cool drink, while local restaurants serve gorgeous Moroccan food. If you want to shop, Tangiers has an array of bazaars and souks featuring unique local handicraft items.
Eating out
With many fine restaurants around the city, tourists will never go hungry when visiting Tangiers. There are both traditional and modern restaurants serving all kinds of international dishes including pizzas, salads, steak and chips.
Only international eateries serve alcoholic drinks. Therefore, if you choose to dine at a traditional eatery be prepared to head somewhere else for an after-dinner drink, as local places dont provide alcoholic drinks with meals. If you want to be entertained during your meal, pay a visit to Hammadis, one of the finest local restaurants featuring a band of Andalucian musicians who will charm you with their music.
Local cuisine
The signature dish of Morocco is couscous. Couscous is a very healthy dish, as it boasts a variety of vegetable, chicken or mutton toppings and roasted vegetables. If you want to try this appetising staple, two of the top eateries are the El Minzah and Hammadis, but you will need to have deep pockets for a meal at one of these luxury dining establishments. Other notable dishes include tajines, a stew cooked with a thick sauce and prunes; harira, a soup made of chick-peas; and pastille, which is a mixture of pigeon meat, rice and egg in a sweet filo pastry. For snacks, go for brouchettes, which are kebabs with a meat of your choice.
Cafs
One of the most favourite pastimes among locals is hanging out around the Place de France, a hub of activity. There are many cafs around this square where you can sip coffee and gossip with your friends. New friends can also be made here. Grand Caf de Paris is the most famous of all cafs in the area, ideal for people-watching and taking in the relaxing ambience of the city in the afternoon. If you are in the area and do not feel like having a cup of coffee in a caf, why not try a glass of special juice called panache, which is a mix of fruit juices, milk, apple and almond.
Shopping
Those visitors who are into shopping will be delighted to find plenty of bazaars and souks (markets) around Tangiers where you can buy local products at very low prices. Be prepared to practice your negotiating skills, as most of the goods must be bargained for. What you will find very interesting here are the hundreds of hole-in-the-wall shops and a variety of stalls selling fine crafts, copper and leather goods, and carpets.
You might also find fabulous carved cedar wood pots and boxes, and other unique items. Shopping for local goods in Tangiers will change your views about unfriendly vendors that you might encounter elsewhere in the world. Here, most of the local sellers are very amicable and you will be invited to sit with them and sip a cup of warm mint tea whilst deciding what to buy.
Casino
Gamblers will not be bored as Tangiers reveals its one and only casino in the city, the Movenpick Hotel & Casino. Located about four kilometres from the heart of the city centre, it is one of the biggest casinos in Africa, boasting more than 200 slot machines and 30 tables. The Movenpick is also one of the finest hotels in Tangiers, so if you dont feel like going back to your hotel after a fun night of gambling, you can also book a room here.
Tangiers Beach
Tangiers boasts many wonderful beaches, but the most famous one is the main beach in Tangiers. Located next to the charming harbour, the beach stretches along the coastline and provides a fantastic view of Gibraltar on a clear day. If you feel like drinking juice or an alcohol drink on the beach, there are many beach bars provided for thirsty tourists. Another interesting option that will have the children screaming with joy is a ride on a camel, which can be a very fun and memorable activity. Camel rides are available all day.
