Nairobi Entertainment

With most tourist traffic into Nairobi revolving around the region's natural history, wildlife and safari excursions, it's easy to get worn out during the day. In the evening, after a long day of sightseeing and exploring, there are plenty of restaurants, bars and dance clubs with themes to suit all interests.

Eating out

There's no shortage of places to eat in Nairobi. Traditional Kenyan cuisine is served up at the small hoteliers at affordable prices. Carnivore is a well-known restaurant in Langata that serves a variety of big game meats including crocodile, impala and kudu. There are restaurants catering for every budget and palette, and the hottest, cleanest food can be found at the busier restaurants and hotels.

Local cuisine

Most local dishes are served up with ugali, a cornmeal flatbread that is dipped into stews and even used to scoop up some thicker dishes. Local Kenyan cuisine, including ugali, can be tasted at Nyama Choma, a restaurant/butchery where you choose your meat before it's thrown onto the barbeque. The food is served in large quantities, so it's best to go with a group of people.

Theatre and music

The Academy Award winning film, Out of Africa was set and filmed in Nairobi. Recently, several British and American films have been shot in Nairobi. Every year in October, the Nairobi Agricultural Show is attended by people from local tribes. Downtown, the bars and discos don't open until late and stay lively until sunrise.

Shopping

The best city places to shop for local handicrafts as well as produce are the City Market at the city centre and Kariakor Market, which is just out of town on Racecourse Road. Local products include sisal basketwork and textiles. Aside from handicrafts, these markets feature some great local food at excellent prices.
