Snorkelling

Snorkelling is one of the most popular tourist activities during summer vacation. This water sport involves swimming near the surface of the water and breathing through a tube (known as a snorkel). If you're new to water sports, snorkelling is a safer alternative to scuba diving, which is done at greater depths. Like scuba diving, it allows you to explore marine life up close, but without the risks of water pressure and equipment failure. However, there are still some risks associated with snorkelling, so it's best to secure travel insurance beforehand.

One common snorkelling risk is getting carried away by currents. Strong currents can pull you in and take you to deep areas, which your snorkelling equipment is not designed to handle. Increasing water pressure can cause ear pain and tissue injuries. You can also get stings from sea creatures like jellyfish and some species of urchin. Snorkelling at dusk or on overcast days reduces visibility, which makes these harder to avoid. Snorkelling injuries are usually minor and treatable, but they can cost you a lot if you do not have sufficient travel insurance.

There are good snorkeling sites in most coastal areas, and instructors are usually willing to help out tourists. You can bring your own equipment or rent them from the venue. Make sure the place has reliable emergency and first aid services.

Snorkelling has a Grade 1 risk level, meaning it is fairly safe compared to other water sports. We recommend getting travel insurance so you won't have to worry about medical costs during your vacation.
