With new ski resorts opening each year and some unexpected countries developing their existing ski slopes, such as Lebanon, Greece and Russia, have made for exciting times for winter sports enthusiasts. A number of Alpine resorts have increased their runs and altitude in a battle against snowfall reductions, providing greater variety and non-ski activities, such as paragliding and canyonning. A trip across the Atlantic can prove fruitful, especially for families. Many American resorts have catered the slopes towards children, with excellent ski schools and accommodation right by the mountain making it the perfect place to learn to ski.
After a hard day on the slopes, a resorts après-ski can be just as important as the powder! European resorts traditionally excel in these areas, with St Mortiz and Chamonix firm favourites with the snowboarding fraternity. Across the Alps, the Italians are giving their French counterparts a run for their money with excellent food, superb hospitality and as much grappa as you can handle. Slovenia offers a energetic nightlife, and with low cost flights daily, it is perfect for a short break of fun in the snow!
Once you’ve decided where to ski, then you need to think about the practicalities, insurance, accommodation and equipment. Many resort websites will enable you to pre-book lift passes and equipment, savng you from the queues. Accommodation can be varied and ranges from hotels, apartments, chalets and catered chalets, set in some spectacular scenery, you may be tempted not to leave your room!
