Travel to Wolf Creek with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Skiing in Wolf Creek

Wolf Creek ski resort offers a great diversity of trails, from wide, groomed runs to challenging tree skiing; while its high altitude ensures there is ample fresh powder for all.

There is a generous spread for all skill levels: 20 per cent of the runs are rated easy, 35 per cent for intermediates, 25 per cent are difficult and 20 per cent for experts only. The longest run is 3.2kms, while the Alberta Lift area offers pristine wilderness carved up by challenging double-black diamond runs and groomed cruisers.

The ski season runs from the beginning of November through to April. The most convenient way to get here is via air, with Durango Airport serviced by daily flights to and from Denver International Airport, from where there is a direct service to and from London Heathrow.

Après-ski in Wolf Creek

Various lodging options, ranging from dormitories and standard rooms to condos and cabins, are available in the nearby townships of Pagosa Springs and South Fork, along with a number of restaurants, bars and childcare facilities. Pagosa Springs also offers hot springs, Indian ruins, several museums, art galleries, and great shopping.

Several bars and restaurants are located slope-side. Alternative activities are available in nearby towns, including ice-skating, ice-fishing, sleigh riding and tubing. Wolf Creek also offers cross country skiing trails. Another inviting activity is relaxing in the hot springs of Pagosa Springs. This town also offers many more restaurants, pubs and bars, as well as interesting museums and galleries.

Wolf Creek ski resort is spread along a high alpine ridge, and skiers are attracted to the area for its versatile terrain and abundant snowfall. There is no ski-in/ski-out lodging; however, there are some good restaurants, a bar, first-aid, and a professional ski school for adults and children.

Transportation to Wolf Creek

Wolf Creek ski resort is located in southern Colorado, nestled among the scenic San Juan Mountains. The most convenient transportation to the resort is via air, with Durango Airport located 128kms away. You can hire a car or take advantage of the direct shuttle service to complete the transfer to the resort.

If driving from Denver, take I-25 south to Walsenburg then follow the scenic highway 160 west through Monte Vista to Wolf Creek Pass (390kms). The resort is a further 1.6kms. From Durango, simply follow highway 160 east for 136kms.

Denver is served by Amtrak trains on the California Zephyr route between Chicago and California. From Denver, you can transfer to the resort by hire car or air to Durango Airport and then a shorter road journey.

Denver International Airport is the nearest international airport and is one of the busiest in the world, offering flights to and from all major US destinations as well as a direct service to and from London Heathrow with British Airways.

Car hire from the airport is available, but a quicker option is to take a connecting flight to Durango Airport, from where there is a direct shuttle service to the slopes. Car hire is also available at Durango for those wishing to take in the scenic beauty at their own pace. Alternatively, there is a shuttle service between Pagosa Springs and Wolf Creek.
