Travel to Sunday River with ski insurance from Essential Travel

At Sunday River, skiers enjoy peace of mind knowing there will always be a reliable cover of snow, as Sunday River is home to the largest snowmaking operation in the US.

The resort itself stretches five kilometres east to west and comes complete with conference and childcare facilities, a professional ski school, first-aid, and a number of ski-in/ski-out restaurants, cafés and bars.

There are a total of 128 trails covering a distance of 77kms, with a longest run of 4.8kms. Snowmaking covers 92 per cent of the 268 hectares of skiable terrain, which is serviced by 18 lifts. Twenty-five per cent of the runs are rated easy, 35 per cent are intermediate, 23 per cent are difficult, and 17 per cent are for experts only. There are 120kms of cross-country trails, and a terrain park on each peak.

Portland International Jetport offers daily flights to Boston International Airport, which services flights to and from most major North American destinations as well as direct flights to and from Europe.

Sunday River’s non-skiing activities include: ice-skating, ice-fishing, dog-sledding, horseback riding, snowshoeing, indoor rock climbing and snowmobile tours. Numerous bars, cafés and restaurants are located slope-side, with many more in Bethel. There is also a health club with pool, sauna and spa.

Après-ski in Sunday River

Sunday River offers a diverse range of slope-side lodging options to suit every budget, with each mountain connected by free shuttles. Numerous restaurants, bars, cafés and lounges are located slope-side, while many more can be found in Bethel. A night-time half-pipe/skating/entertainment centre is popular among younger folk.

Sunday River ski resort boasts ample ski-in/ski-out lodging and dining, conference and childcare facilities, a professional ski school with special programmes for adults, children and women-only, ski and snowboard hire, and first-aid.

The quaint village of Bethel makes for an interesting day’s exploring; it is dotted with Victorian-era houses, tall church steeples, craft and antique shops, and museums. A large section of the village centre is in the National Historic Register. Nearby Mount Abram ski resort is a perennial favourite among families.

Transportation to Sunday River

Sunday River ski resort is located 120kms northwest of Portland (Maine), near the charming Victorian village of Bethel. Portland International Jetport offers daily flights to and from Boston International Airport, which services flights across North America and Europe.

If driving from Portland, take I-95 north to exit 63/Gray, for highway 26 north to Bethel. Sunday River is located a further 10kms north. The 120-kilometre drive takes approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes. The drive from Boston along I-95 is 288kms and takes around three hours.

Amtrak trains service Boston (Massachusetts) and Portland (Maine) from across the country. When you get to Boston, you can take a flight to Portland and then transfer by hire car.

Portland International Jetport offers daily flights to Boston International Airport, which services flights to and from most major North American destinations as well as direct flights to Europe. From the airport, you can transfer to the resort by hire car.
