The town dates from the 18th century and is authentic and rustic, yet full of the necessary shops, facilities and services, and provides a charming counterpart to Stowe Mountain’s ski slopes. There are 56 slopes at Stowe Mountain, including serene nursery slopes, steady intermediate slopes and a small number of quality expert runs. The slopes include a longest run of six kilometres and cover a total distance of 65kms; the vertical is 700m. Twelve lifts provide transportation to the descents and have a combined uplift capacity of over 12,000 skiers per hour. Stowe Mountain offers some slope-side accommodation, but skiers usually choose to stay in the town of Stowe, where there is a far greater range of lodging options. The ski resort offers a number of winter leisure alternatives to skiing, including snowmobiling, ice-skating and sleigh riding. Après-ski is supplied by a host of shops, restaurants and bars, both in the resort and in town. The ski slopes at Stowe Mountain are open from November to April, with discounted rates for young children and senior citizens. The most practical way to reach the resort is to fly to Burlington and take a taxi to Stowe Mountain. Skiing in Stowe MountainLocated near Burlington in northern Vermont, Stowe Mountain is known for its 56 quality slopes, providing skiing for all levels of expertise. The resort’s slopes are generally lengthy, meandering through an assortment of wooded areas and wide-open glades, and are spread over two mountains.Stowe Mountain’s 56 slopes extend over 65kms of ski terrain and two mountains - Stowe Mountain and Mount Mansfield - the latter of which is Vermont’s highest peak. The slopes are split up among beginners, intermediates and advanced/expert riders. Twelve lifts connect the runs, the longest of which is six kilometres. Stowe Mountain also features three terrain parks and a super-pipe, and night skiing is available. Stowe Mountain is open for skiing from November to April, with optimal natural snow in February, but reliable coverage throughout the season due to extensive snowmaking facilities. Most visitors access the resort by flying to Burlington and taking a taxi the rest of the way. Après-ski in Stowe MountainIn addition to skiing, Stowe Mountain offers ice-skating, sleigh riding and snowmobiling tours. Several hotels have the added off-slope attractions of swimming pools and spa facilities. Nightlife is lively, both at the resort itself and in the town of Stowe below, with a plethora of restaurants and bars to provide entertainment.There is a limited amount of onsite accommodation at Stowe Mountain, and a much wider selection in the town of Stowe, where visitors can choose from hotels, motels and lodges. The Trapp Family Lodge is a classy hotel that is particularly popular with visitors, and boasts excellent facilities. Stowe has a multitude of shops, and childcare services are available for children from six weeks to six years. For sightseeing, visitors at Stowe Mountain should head to the nearby town of Burlington, attractively situated on the edge of a lake. For more skiing, the resort of Mad River Glen is renowned for its superb expert terrain, but snowboarding is not permitted. Alternatively, Sugarbush is open to both skiers and boarders, and has reliably good snow conditions. Transportation in Stowe MountainStowe Mountain ski resort is situated in northern Vermont, about one hour away from Burlington by car. The easiest method of transportation to the resort is to fly to Burlington Airport and take a taxi or shuttle bus to Stowe Mountain.Alternatively, if you opt for self-drive, Stowe Mountain is easily accessible from almost any direction, due to the network of major interstates that lead directly into or close to the town of Stowe. Stowe is located approximately 555kms from New York City, via I-91 and I-89. Amtrak services travel from all over New England to Waterbury, from where Stowe and Stowe Mountain are easily accessible via the Stowe Trolley transport system. The international airport at Burlington is served by flights from all over the United States and direct flights from the UK. Taxis and shuttle buses provide transportation from the airport to Stowe or Stowe Mountain; additionally, some of the hotels provide a transfer service. If you are driving from the airport, Stowe is accessible via I-89 east to Waterbury and route 100 north. From Stowe town, take route 108 west to Stowe Mountain. The journey covers 75kms and takes about one hour. Greyhound buses also run to Waterbury from destinations across the United States. From Waterbury, you can transfer by hire car or the Stowe Trolley to the resort.
