Skiing in Ski Cooper

Ski Cooper is popular among families due to its friendly, small town atmosphere, abundance of wide, easy runs and its scenic location within the San Isabel National Forest.

A total of 26 trails are spread out over 162 skiable hectares, while the Piney Creek Nordic Center offers 25kms of groomed cross-country trails and Chicago Ridge offers 996 hectares of treed and bowled skiing, accessible by snowcat. Thirty per cent of the runs are rated as easy, 40 per cent as intermediate, and 30 per cent as expert, with all serviced by four lifts; the longest run is 2.24kms.

The ski season runs from mid-November until the end of March, with the best conditions occurring around January to mid-February.

Ski Cooper is located 206kms southwest of Denver International Airport and 86.5kms east of Eagle County Airport. Denver International services flights from all major US cities as well as direct flights from London Heathrow, while there are also daily flights to Eagle County Airport.

Ski Cooper also offers snowmobiling, sleigh rides, ice-skating, backcountry snowcat tours and tubing. Leadville has a number of pubs and bars, as well as interesting museums, shops and historical sites.

Transportation to Ski Cooper

Ski Cooper resort is situated in central Colorado, high up in the Rockies, 206kms southwest of Denver, 216kms northwest of Colorado Springs, and 272kms east of Grand Junction. The easiest form of transportation is to drive from either Denver International Airport or Eagle County Airport.

If driving from Denver International Airport, take I-70 west to exit 195 at Copper Mountain. Head south on highway 91 to Leadville, then turn right on to highway 24; Ski Cooper is located 14.5kms up, at the top of Fremont Pass. If driving from Eagle County Airport, take I-70 east to exit 171, and this will put you on highway 24. From Colorado Springs, take highway 24 west all the way to Leadville.

Amtrak trains and Greyhound Lines buses go to Denver from around the nation. Amtrak’s California Zephyr line goes from Chicago though Denver to San Francisco. From Denver, you can transfer by car to the resort.

The nearest international airport is Denver, which services flights from all major North American destinations as well as direct flights to and from London Heathrow. Car hire is available for the scenic drive to Leadville and Ski Cooper. Alternatively, you can take a connecting flight to Eagle County Airport from where the drive is shorter.
