Travel to Red Lodge Mountain with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Red Lodge Mountain is situated in southern Montana’s expansive cattle farmlands, perched just north of the Wyoming border and southwest of the town of Billings (Montana).

The village of Red Lodge has a rich historical heritage that has been skilfully combined with modern facilities and extensive accommodation options. The resort is ideal for families, offering a good selection of all-age activities and excellent ski tuition, along with a wide selection of shops, restaurants and après-ski venues.

The ski area at Red Lodge Mountain resort encompasses 71 runs, ranging from gentle nursery slopes to challenging expert routes. The slopes are connected by eight efficient lifts (including two high-speed quads) with a cumulative ability to transport as many as 10,690 skiers per hour. A four-kilometre run known as ‘Lazy M’ is the resort’s lengthiest. For snowboarders and extreme skiers, the sizeable terrain park offers non-stop entertainment.

The resort features a comprehensive range of facilities, including: a ski gear rental shop, a childcare centre for daylight hours, a ski accessory and gift shop, and a commendable ski school offering tuition for all ages and ability levels from three years upwards. There are four onsite café/restaurants at Red Mountain Lodge (one at the peak, one mid-mountain and two at the base), as well as a wide array of eateries, accommodation and night spots.

The winter season at Red Lodge Mountain ski resort runs from early December to early April, with free skiing for children under five years and seniors over 70. The easiest way of reaching the ski resort is by flying to nearby Billings and renting a car to get to Red Lodge Mountain.

Skiing in Red Lodge Mountain

Red Lodge Mountain offers superb skiing for the full range of expertise levels on powder-blanketed, delightfully uncluttered slopes. The resort also offers fabulous snowboarding, and boasts a 400-metre-long terrain park. Red Mountain Lodge is situated in the south of Montana, close to the Wyoming border, in an area characterised by abundant winter snowfall that creates prime conditions for world class skiing.

Skiing in Red Lodge Mountain caters for all ages and ability levels, with 25 per cent of the 71 slopes allocated to beginners, 40 per cent to intermediates, 25 per cent to advanced skiers and 10 percent to experts. The slopes are linked by means of eight lifts with the combined capacity to transport over 10,000 skiers per hour.

A four-kilometre run is the resort’s lengthiest, but if that doesn’t satiate your appetite for distance, cross-country trails are an alternative option. Snowboarders and skiers have access to a large terrain park equipped with an adrenalin-pumping selection of jumps, bumps, table-tops and rails.

Red Lodge Mountain is open for skiing from early December to early April, with optimal snow conditions in February. The most convenient method of transportation to the resort is to fly to Billings International Airport and rent a car to complete the journey.

Après-ski in Red Lodge Mountain

In addition to the slopes, Red Lodge Mountain features a wide range of non-skiing activities, including: ice-skating, ice-fishing, snowmobiling, horse-drawn sleigh riding, tubing, swimming and mountaineering.

A nearby health and recreation club provides opportunities for sports and leisure, and a wide array of dining venues are situated both on and off the mountain, and in the village of Red Lodge.

Additionally, lodging units and a selection of nightlife venues are located in Red Lodge town and in the town of Billings. Red Lodge Mountain resort features daily childcare amenities, a ski accessory and gift shop, an equipment rental shop, and a ski school offering tuition for beginners through to experts.

The ski slopes are not the only visitor attraction in the Red Lodge Mountain region. The area around the resort is criss-crossed by a network of roads meandering through diverse and magnificent countryside. Alternatively, a short drive across the Wyoming border will bring you to Yellowstone National Park, with its bubbling hot springs, gorgeous lakes and superb panoramas.

Transportation in Red Lodge Mountain

Red Lodge Mountain ski resort is situated in southern Montana, not far from the border with Wyoming, and 95kms from the town of Billings. The most practical method of transportation to the resort is to fly into the international airport at Billings and hire a car to reach the resort. Other transportation options for Red Lodge Mountain are self-drive and rail travel.

Driving to Red Lodge Mountain is easy due to the conveniently accessible network of interstate highways. I-90 is the most direct route to the resort, running all the way from Seattle to Billings (1,325kms), and on to Boston. If you are coming from the east, I-94 from Milwaukee merges with I-90 just east of Billings. From I-90, take the 434 exit on to highway 212 to access Red Lodge Mountain.

The most convenient airport for accessing Red Lodge Mountain is Logan International Airport in Billings, which receives regular flights from United, Delta, Northwest and other airlines. If you opt for hiring a car from the airport to complete your journey to Red Lodge Mountain, take I-90 west and then exit at 434 on to highway 212 to reach Red Lodge Mountain. Taxi transportation is also available from the airport to the resort.

Greyhound buses run from various points across the United States to the town of Billings, from where Red Lodge Mountain is easily accessible.
