Travel to Killington with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Killington presents an enormous variety of terrain spread out over 200 slopes, and is also a haven for snowboarders, with two terrain parks, three half-pipes and a boarder-cross course.

The ski resort’s vast size and numerous après-ski venues make it a great place for socialising, but those looking for a peaceful mountain getaway should be warned that Killington can get extremely busy, especially on weekends.

The resort extends over 87kms of terrain, and its 200 slopes range from novice (30 per cent) through intermediate (39 per cent) to advanced/expert level (31 per cent). A 10-kilometre ski run is the longest at Killington, and for even more distance, there are 56kms of cross-country trails in the resort and 170kms in the surrounding area. A system of 31 lifts provides access to the slopes.

Killington’s incredibly long ski season runs from October to June, with cheapest rates offered at the beginning of June and at the end of March. Children under six years of age ski for free, and discount rates apply for skiers over 65. The easiest way to reach Killington is to fly to Burlington and take bus transportation to the resort.

Skiing in Killington

Killington ski resort is a massive, purpose-built ski destination that offers a vast area of varied terrain and 200 slopes for all levels of ability. The resort has superb snowboarding facilities, all manner of convenience amenities, and the largest vertical drop in New England. It is a lively, bustling resort - not for those looking for a quiet retreat.

Killington is a skiing extravaganza, with 200 slopes snaking across 87kms of diverse terrain, a longest run of 10 thigh-burning kilometres, and a state-of-the-art-system of 31 lifts. All levels of expertise are catered for here, with gentle novice slopes making up 30 per cent of the total number of slopes, smooth intermediate runs take up 39 per cent, and challenging advanced/expert runs totalling 31 per cent.

Additionally, Killington features some tricky off-piste routes (Fusion Zones) for more experienced skiers. Cross-country skiing is also extensive, with 56kms of trails within the resort and an additional 170kms nearby. Snowboarding facilities are outstanding, with two great terrain parks, a boarder-cross course and three half-pipes, including a super-pipe.

Accommodation at Killington is supplied by roughly 5,000 beds in hotels and condos. Further lodging is available in close proximity to the ski area, and overnight camper parking is available without hook-ups. Holidaymakers have a huge assortment of facilities at their disposal, including: childcare, pharmacies and first-aid, numerous shops, a post office, and a ski and snowboard school.

Après-ski in Killington

Non-skiing activities at Killington include: ice-fishing, ice-skating, sleigh riding, snowshoeing, tubing, tobogganing and nearby snowmobiling. The resort also offers a spa, health centre, indoor tennis, swimming pool and a fun park. Additionally, nights are full of action, with a large number of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Lodging is plentiful both in the ski resort and in the surrounding area. Off-slope leisure options at Killington include ice-fishing, ice-skating, sleigh riding, snowshoeing, tubing, tobogganing, swimming, tennis, spa, health centre and a fun park. Snowmobiling is also available nearby.

Nightlife is one of the resort’s main attractions and amenities are impressive, with loads of shops, childcare facilities, a commendable ski and snowboard school, a post office and a medical centre.

Both Mad River Glen and Sugarbush ski resorts are located within easy driving distance of Killington and offer alternative slopes. Sugarbush is renowned for its reliable snow conditions and is an excellent snowboarding venue; while Mad River does not permit boarding but offers fabulous expert trails for skiers.

Transportation in Killington

Killington is located just west of central Vermont, about two hours from New Hampshire. The ski resort can only be reached directly by road, but most travellers access Killington by flying to Burlington International Airport and transferring by shuttle bus.

Killington is located 425kms from New York, and the journey takes roughly five hours by car. Take I-87 north to Albany and connect with highway 7 northwards to Rutland. Then take highway 4 and Killington road to the ski resort.

If you are driving from Boston/Manchester, follow I-93 to junction 11 (near Concord), and exit on to I-89 to Hartford. From Hartford, highway 4 and W Hill Road/Killington road go to Killington ski resort. The journey covers 260kms and takes about three hours.

Daily Amtrak train services run from New York City to Rutland, and Killington can be accessed from there via bus transportation or hire car.

Burlington International is the closest airport to Killington, and is located approximately 140kms away; it receives flights from the US, Canada, and the UK. Buses provide transportation from the airport to Killington, or alternatively, you could hire a car to complete the journey. From Burlington International, Killington is accessible by taking I-89 to Waterbury, exiting on to highway 100, crossing the intersection of highways 4 and 100, and taking Killington road to the ski resort. The journey takes about two hours.

Alternative airports are at Albany (New York) and Manchester (New Hampshire), and flights also go to nearby Rutland Airport from Burlington.
