Travel to Donner with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Donner is not geared for trendy glamour seekers. Instead, its back-to-basics atmosphere is likely to appeal to the more simple soul looking for a friendly, down-to-earth skiing experience. You’ll find that what Donner lacks in style, the ski resort more than makes up for in views, laid-back vibes and great ski slopes.

Donner’s network of 45 ski runs is characterised by bird’s-eye views of Donner Lake, Castle Peak and the Summit area, and better yet, by thick, powdery snow that puts some of the swankier resorts to shame. Although opportunities for long-distance skiing are rather restricted (with a longest run of two kilometres), Donner is sought after for its reliable snow cover, natural beauty and diverse trails that make it a fabulous destination for families and varied-ability groups.

The slopes fall into the categories of 25 per cent beginner, 50 per cent intermediate and 25 per cent advanced, and the runs are connected by a system of six lifts (one triple and five doubles). Snowboarders have access to a quality terrain park and half-pipe.

The winter season at Donner Ski Ranch runs from mid-November through to mid-April, and the ski resort is open from 08:00 to 18:00 daily. Anniversary Weeks are held four times during the ski season, when lift tickets are reduced to $10 apiece. Donner can be most easily accessed by road, via I-80 and Donner Pass.

Skiing in Donner

Located far above the city bustle atop Donner Summit, Donner Ski Ranch is one of America’s oldest ski resorts, and its spectacular views, friendly atmosphere and reliable snowfall still attract crowds of visitors to its simple slopes. If a thriving party scene is what you are after, Donner is far from the mark. There is no glamour and glitz here – Donner Ski Ranch is a low key, relaxed resort where the foremost focus rests on a quality skiing experience.

One of the primary reasons that Donner, despite its simplicity, is such a popular ski destination is its excellent snow record. The 45 slopes are characteristically loaded with delightfully powdery snow, putting Donner’s skiing opportunities a cut above many of the more luxurious resorts.

All levels of ability are welcome at Donner, with slopes falling into the respective categories of 25 per cent beginner, 50 per cent intermediate and 25 per cent advanced level. Six lifts, one triple and five doubles, connect the pistes.

Apart from skiing, Donner offers very little in the way of entertainment. Additional recreational opportunities are presented by the Winter Sports School, and the resort also offers free guided ski run/historic tours through the surrounding areas. Truckee, located roughly 16kms from Donner, provides a full range of entertainment options in the form of restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs and cinemas.

The winter season at Donner Ski Ranch runs from mid-November through to mid-April, and the ski resort is open from 08:00 to 18:00 daily. Donner Ski Ranch is located roughly 135kms east of Sacramento and 70kms west of Reno, and is most easily reached by car via the I-80 and Donner Pass.

Après-ski in Donner

Donner’s amenities include a cafeteria catering for all meals, a cocktail lounge, and a rental and retail shop. Onsite lodging is provided by the Summit House, and additional lodging is available in Truckee, approximately 16kms away.

In addition to skiing, the resort offers a Winter Sports School and free guided ski run/historic tours through the pristine Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and the surrounding areas. Donner is a back-to-basics resort and there are few off-slope entertainment options. Party-seekers should look elsewhere for thrills, but for relaxed, friendly socialising, Donner is perfect. Nearby Truckee offers a variety of restaurants, bars and movie theatres.

Transportation to Donner

Donner Ski Ranch is situated northwest of Lake Tahoe on Donner Pass, approximately 70kms west of Reno (Nevada) and 16kms west of Truckee (California). Road transportation is the best way of reaching the resort.

If you are driving from Reno, take I-80 west to Donner Pass, which leads to the resort. Alternatively, from Sacramento, take I-80 east to Donner Pass. It is advisable to carry snow chains, as snow storms in the area can change road conditions very quickly.
