Outstanding ski tuition and great nursery slopes make the resort a first choice for many family groups, and a modern extension of the ski area into Boulder Creek Canyon offers seasoned skiers the chance to strut their stuff. The resort encompasses more than 60 ski runs in total, made up of 20 per cent beginner, 40 per cent intermediate and 40 per cent advanced pistes. Long distance fans should head for Stamphill, the lengthiest run on the mountain at just over three kilometres. A state-of-the-art Kaser conveyor lift, one quad, two triples, five doubles and two surface lifts serve the mountain, making up a total of 11 transportation mechanisms. For snowboarders, four freestyle terrain parks and a half-pipe provide amusement for all ages and stages of ability. The ski season at Dodge Ridge resort runs from December through to April. A significant reason for the resort’s success as a ski destination is the ease with which it can be accessed, within three hours’ drive from most Bay Area communities and without the stress of traversing treacherous mountain passes. Skiing in Dodge RidgeDubbed ‘the closest snow to home’, Dodge Ridge resort is the perfect option for a quick winter skiing getaway, situated just 240kms from San Francisco, and within three hours driving time of most Bay Area locations.Ski routes range from novice to advanced, making Dodge Ridge an ideal resort for family ski groups. There are roughly 60 trails in total, traversing an area of 326 hectares and connected by 11 lifts. SkiWee Land is home to one of America’s most commendable ski schools, and features first class beginner terrain designed to ease inexperienced skiers into the slope experience. The undulating trails of Stagecoach, Comstock and Graceland are dreamy intermediate runs; while Dodge Ridge’s most recent extension into Boulder Creek has opened the door to previously uncharted expert territory. Although the resort’s longest run is far from phenomenal at three kilometres, the lack of long distance routes is made up for by other delights. Check out Dodge Ridge’s steepest drop, Six Shooter; be awed by spectacular vistas on Sure Shot; or try out the resort’s cross-country skiing options. Snowboarders are equally well-catered for, with four insane terrain parks and a testing half-pipe. Dodge Ridge’s ski season extends from December through to April. The resort is situated just 240kms from San Francisco and under 160kms from both Modesto and Stockton, and can be easily accessed by car, without any mountain passes barring the way. Après-ski in Dodge RidgeUnlike many ski destinations, Dodge Ridge is a no-frills mountain exclusively designed for skiing, with no slope-side accommodation or resort town to speak of. Instead, visitors have the choice of the surrounding towns of Pinecrest, Longbarn, Sugarpine, Twainehart, Sonora or Columbia to utilise as base camps. Apart from several mountain and base area restaurants, most off-slope entertainment is centred in these nearby locations. Ice-skating, sledding, tobogganing and tubing are also available nearby. For hungry skiers, two restaurants are conveniently located on the mountain, and a host of other eateries are stationed at the base area. In addition to downhill skiing, visitors to the resort have the opportunity to engage in other exciting winter activities including cross-country skiing, snow-skating and snowshoeing. Off the mountain, the communities of Sonora, Jamestown and Colombia date back to the gold rush of the mid-19th century. The Historic Columbia State Park is an old gold mining town scattered with historical buildings, museums and galleries, offering an interesting peek into this bygone era. Alternatively, the Sierra Railroad Museum in Jamestown gives visitors the chance to take a ride on a genuine steam engine.
