Travel to Wengen with ski insurance from Essential Travel

Wengens sunny position, high in the mountains is matched by the friendly disposition of its 1,200 residents, who are amazingly warm and welcoming to incoming visitors. Furthermore, the resort’s small, cosy size and strikingly beautiful surroundings imbue it with a beguiling and unforgettable ambience.

The ski resort offers some excellent runs, mostly designed for intermediates, with 50 per cent of the total 98kms of slopes allocated to this level.

Beginners and advanced skiers have 30 per cent and 20 per cent of the runs, respectively. Wengen is connected to the rest of the Jungfrau region, affording access to a vast 213kms of runs in total. The longest piste in this domain is a lengthy 16kms.

The serene nature of the ski resort is such that après-ski is relaxed and low-key, but a handful of restaurants, cafés, bars and discos in the town provide nightly entertainment. Cultural events, including musical performances and folklore evenings, are regularly hosted.

During the day, the ski slopes are just one option available to visitors. Wengen also offers natural ice-skating, mountaineering, snowshoeing, paragliding and tobogganing. The resort caters well for children, with nursery facilities, a ski kindergarten and a children’s ski school.


Skiing in Wengen

Wengen is cradled by the striking peaks of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains in the Lauterbrunnen Valley of central Switzerland, making it one of the world’s most beautiful skiing destinations.

The resort is suitable for all levels of ability, though intermediates are particularly favoured, and is the. Wengen is also the site of the renowned Lauberhorn World Cup downhill course – the longest and one of the most exquisite on earth.

Wengen is linked to the rest of the Jungfrau skiing region, with 98kms of pistes in the resort itself and 213kms in the entire region. The longest run in the Jungfrau area is 16kms – delightfully challenging for even seasoned long-distance skiers. Within the resort’s boundaries, 30 per cent of the runs are geared to beginners, 50 per cent to intermediates and 20 per cent to advanced skiers.

The resort’s slopes are linked by 23 lifts, and there are 42 lifts in the entire Jungfrau region, with a cumulative uplift capacity of 42,000 skiers per hour. Nearby Lauterbrunnen has 17kms of cross-country runs through breathtaking scenery, and. T two schools, with 100 instructors between them, provide excellent ski and snowboard instruction. Night skiing in Wengen is also available.

Skiing is offered at Wengen between December and April, with excellent snow guaranteed virtually throughout, due to the high elevation of the resort. Wengen can be accessed by road or rail transportation, or via a combination of air travel with one or both of the former options.

Apres-ski in Wengen

Wengen’s attractions are not just limited to skiing. Visitors are invited to participate in a range of other winter pastimes, both indoor and outdoor. The ski resort provides opportunities for natural ice-skating, mountaineering, snowshoeing, paragliding and tobogganing, as well as nightly entertainment. The latter is laid-back, consisting of musical concerts, folklore evenings, fine dining at the resort restaurants, or socialising at the small selection of bars and discos in at the resort.

There are about 5,500 visitor beds in the resort, with a range of choices on offer, to suit all preferences and budget allowances. Visitors can take their pick of upmarket hotels, traditional chalets and more modest accommodation. The town is well-equipped for children, with a nursery, a ski kindergarten, and a children’s ski school available.

The exquisitely beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of the most impressive glacial valleys in the world, and is one of the largest protected natural areas in Switzerland. There are endless sightseeing possibilities in this region, with a wealth of scenic pastures, tranquil waterfalls and beautiful mountain trails to explore, right on the ski resort’s doorstep.

Transportation in Wengen

Wengen ski resort is situated in central Switzerland and can be accessed directly by means of road or rail. An alternative means of transportation to the resort is to take a flight to Berne-Belp Airport, approximately one hour from the resort by rail and two hours by road.

To travel to Wengen by car from the UK, you will need to first take a car ferry to the French port of Calais, from where it is a farther 847kms to Wengen. The journey takes approximately nine hours, and is mainly along major highways in France and Switzerland, with tolls amounting to approximately €20. If you fly to Berne-Belp and hire a car, the drive takes about two hours via Interlaken.

Train travel to Wengen from the UK is relatively easy, with a rail network directly to the resort. From London Waterloo or Ashford in Kent, take the Eurostar to Paris, connect with a TGV train to Berne (five hours), and from there, take another train to Interlaken. From Interlaken, you can either catch two connecting trains to the resort or take the Skibus directly to Wengen.

The closest international airport to the resort is Berne-Belp, situated roughly one hour north of the resort by rail. From Berne, take a train to Interlaken Ost, then to Lauterbrunnen and finally to Wengen, or take the Skibus from Interlaken to the resort. If you choose to hire a car and drive to the resort, travel to Interlaken and then straight on to the resort.
